Forget staying indoors all summer long. McAllen has some great camps that will allow your kids to enjoy and explore all that nature has to offer. From learning to use natural things found in the wilderness to using their creativity to paint outdoors, McAllen has some of the best camps for your kids to make the most out of their summer, like activities at the McAllen Nature Center and Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center.
McAllen Nature Center
Join the McAllen Nature Center for their Boy/Girl Scout-inspired summer camp. This camp will not only educate them about the Rio Grande Valley’s unique green space, but also provide the resources to motivate them to act for positive environmental changes and develop essential outdoor skills. This will conclude with a Family Night Hike on Friday night. An optional Friday family overnight campout is also included in the registration fee. Bring your tents and camping materials!
June 13th, 20th, 27th – July 11th, 18th, 25th: Nature, Fitness & Teamwork for Kids | 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
This program was designed to encourage kids to work with nature and promote a healthy lifestyle. Completely FREE, this fun adventure will take place each week, but you can attend all of them or try out just a couple. Remember, though, this will take place outdoors, so come dressed for physical activities! All ages are welcome.
June 20th – 25th: Wilderness Explorer’s Camp (Ages 12-15) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Curiosity will drive your kids through this wild native habitat as they use skills to approach the wilderness! They will learn about local wildlife, communicating without technology, navigating using the sky, using a map and compass, and many other skills needed to survive the wild!
This camp will conclude with a Family Night Hike on Friday night. An optional Friday family overnight campout is also included in the registration fee. Remember to bring your tents and camping materials!
June 20th – 24th: Nature Niños Summer Camp (Ages 7-12) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Campers will participate in nature-based activities to enhance their creativity and sense of wonder that will inspire them to venture confidently into our urban nature sanctuary. This camp will conclude with a Family Night Hike on Friday night. An optional Friday family overnight campout is also included in the registration fee. Bring your own tents and camping gear.
July 11th – July 15th: Environmental Careers Camp (Ages 14-19) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Staff naturalists will broaden your teen’s horizons by exploring global careers that allow engagement in the natural world. These activities will develop skills such as species identification, scientific sampling methods and endangered species conservation.
July 11th – July 15th: Wild Art Camp! (Ages 9-13) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Are you looking for a combination of nature and art? Campers will learn the basics of nature sketching, painting and crafting in an outdoor setting. Art helps children develop their fine motor skills and will touch on basic math skills. Have fun and get creative!
July 18th – July 22nd: Natural Art and Mural Painting Summer Camp (Ages 14-19) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Unleash your inner artist! At this camp, kids will explore the natural world in a creative and challenging way. Participants will learn and practice artistic principles while working independently and with a team on several exciting projects. Natural materials found onsite will be used to build unique works of art! Painting, sculptures and instillation art will be covered. Campers will be focusing on painting a permanent mural for the McAllen Nature Center!
Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center
June 14th – June 17th: Earth Beats Camp (Ages 9-12) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Campers will discover the science of nature’s drumbeats, hoofbeats, wingbeats and heartbeats through drumming, stomp dance and wildlife photography. Let out your inner wild and dance to nature’s natural rhythm! Registration is required.
June 28th – July 1st: Campground Quinta (Ages 6-8) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Have your kids always wanted to go camping but were afraid to spend the night? Here, they can enjoy campground games, tents, fishing and nature explorations without the overnight camping part! Your kid will come home with great stories and fun!
July 5th – July 8th: Survivor Skills Camp (Ages 9-12) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Always wanted to learn how to avoid nature’s dangers? To catch the signs, build shelter, and find food? Campers will learn how to do all this plus learn to explore the wild safely! Your kids will become pro survivalists in no time! Registration is required.
July 19th – July 22nd: Dinosaur Camp (Ages 6-8) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Roar like the dinosaurs! Campers will dig like a paleontologist, learn about their favorite dinosaurs and have a fun-filled week full of paleo-mania!
August 2nd – August 5th: Wild-Art Camp (Ages 9 -12) | 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Here, art and nature will collide! Your kids will have fun creating arts and crafts projects using rocks, barks, sticks, leaves, sand, fish, flowers, water, clay and more! Let their creativity spark with nature!
