What makes you look younger, reduces your risk of heart disease by 50% and has its own month to celebrate how awesome it is to ride on two wheels? Yes, bicycling is a great exercise that the whole family can have fun doing! With May being National Bicycle Month and May 20th serving as National Bike to Work Day, we want you to grab your bike and head out for a spin! If you don’t have one, that is not a problem. You can rent one from one of the many McAllen B-Cycle locations across town. Not really into bicycling? There are plenty of great pros and how easy it is to rent a bike to get you motivated!
Let’s name the obvious reasons first. Riding helps the environment, reduces pollution and you can save money on gas. These three reasons alone should convince you to take a ride around town on your two-wheeled cycles, but if you need more convincing, here are a few more reasons.
It’s a Great Alternative to Running
Compared to running, bicycling is the winner for getting fit faster, building muscle and reducing the changes of bodily aches. True, you won’t lose as many calories in a single session compared to running, but you will increase your stamina while pedaling your heart away. Now, if you love running, that’s great! But for those days where you want something different, bicycling is a great alternative.
Pedaling to Intelligence
Researchers from Illinois University found that a 5% improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness from bicycling led to an improvement of up to 15% in tests of mental acuity. It was also concluded that bicycling helps build new cells in the region of the brain responsible for memory; the hippocampus.
Biking is a multitasking exercise that enhances coordination thanks in part to constant pedaling, steering, applying brakes and staying balanced. Finally, we have hope for improving our coordination!
People who bicycle ride for 30 minutes five days a week take about half as many sick days compared to couch potatoes. With moderate exercising, immune cells become more active and help fight off infections. Purdue University studies have shown that regular bicycling can also cut your risk of heart disease by 50%!
Bicycle to a Younger You
There are anti-aging benefits that come with bicycling. No, we’re not kidding. By increasing circulation, bicycling helps your body flush out toxins while delivering nutrition and oxygen to skin cells. Oh, we’re dusting off our bike already!
