Headlining act Felt & Fur is an electronic trio from Denton, Texas with a brand of dark, synth-pop that is an amalgam of ritual and chaos. The trio is Alizsha Pennington on guitar and vocals with Randall Minick and Jarrod Estes on keyboards, percussion and synths. Their sophomore full-length album, Held made its debut release on Triptych Records last November and was immediately hailed in the local press with accolades. It was named the 2018 “Album of the Year” by the Dentonite. The album’s feature single, “Pulling a Thread,” was named “Song of the Day” by Central Track, Dallas’ premier culture guide and “Music Video of the Day” by White Light White Heat.
Minick and Estes breathe organic spacious keyboards amiss reverb-laden static, and hissing drones that grow as they literally charge the air. Their hypnotic, driving rhythms and spatial chord progressions meld with Pennington’s wistful guitar melodies to form deep, repetitive, trance-inducing scapes of sound. As penetrating, enduring synth melodies become charged with Pennington’s agonizing vocals layered with rich tones, dynamic volumes and enormous emotional range, the listener is guided through a labyrinth of sound and transported to what can only be described as oblivion.
