The Salvation Army started National Donut Day to honor those who performed important wartime services. During World War I, volunteers (mostly women) were sent out to French battlefields to “provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers”.
The soldiers craved something sweet, and due to a limited amount of supplies, these women, who later came to be known as “Doughnut Girls”, or “Doughnut Dollies”, fried donuts using cans of evaporated milk as cutters and grape juice bottles as rolling pins! Using only flour, lard, sugar and sometimes cinnamon, they made thousands of donuts and coffee for U.S. Soldiers.
Now we celebrate National Donut Day on the first Friday of every June! Take a look at some locations in McAllen that’ll be participating!
Known for their fluffy, flaky texture, Shipley Do-Nuts has been around since 1936! Although they offer a variety of flavors and breakfast kolaches, their glazed donut is a staple that’s been popular for decades. This June 1st, receive one free glazed donut with any purchase between 5:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
*Donuts are limited to one per purchase.
For those that really love a thinner, airy variety, Krispy Kreme will be giving away one free donut of your choice! This includes all flavors except Apple Fritter. No purchase necessary.
Beauty & Beast Cuisine Bites and Bakery
If you’re looking for a healthier option, these protein donuts are gluten-free, diabetic-friendly and made from scratch daily. It took Beauty & Beast’s nutri-chef over 100 tries before the recipe was perfected, but they definitely got it right! For National Donut Day, they’ll be having a box of half-dozen preassembled protein donuts for $10.
CC’s Sweets & Tweets
CC’s will be participating in National Donut Day by giving away their famous New Year’s Resolution Cupcake (while supplies last) that consists of marble cake filled with cookie dough, topped with whipped ganache icing and a MINI DONUT on top. As a bonus, they’ll be featuring how to make this particular cupcake on their Instagram Stories as part of their “Feature Friday” segment.
