Learning isn’t boring when you’re exploring McAllen. There are so many fun activities, exhibits and events that your kids might forget they’re learning at the same time.

McAllen Library

The McAllen Public Library system consists of the Main Branch, Lark Branch, and Palm View Branch.

Each branch offers summer reading programs, computer related classes, story time, and events for children and teens. Visit the Library Event Calendar here for a full list of upcoming events. Services like tax form distribution, test proctoring, and tours are available. There are also meeting rooms for study groups and business meetings.

Every Saturday, the Main Branch is home to The Market @ McAllen, a group of local fresh produce and organic product vendors.

Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas

Located in McAllen’s Convention Center District, the Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas honors those who served our nation in the armed forces. The 5-acre site, which is still growing, features black granite walls with soldiers’ names etched on, as well as stunning statues of troops. Coming soon...the American Spire of Honor, which broke ground early this year.


The Rio Grande Valley is home to many cultures and encompasses a unique atmosphere of diversity. For community members or visitors, taking a trip to any one of McAllen's museums is a great way to learn about the local vibrant heritage and how it all began. The museums are entertaining, family-friendly, and a must-see!

International Museum of Art and Science

As a member of the Smithsonian Affiliation Program, IMAS showcases exclusive works from around the globe. The museum features collections in folk art, fine art, and geology as well as special exhibits in art, science, and history. There's a little something for everyone! Children can visit the KidsZone and are enchanted by lively displays and adults can take pleasure in the fascinating, themed exhibits.

McAllen Heritage Center

MHC offers a closer look into Rio Grande Valley heritage with an impressive collection of artwork, historical documents and photographs, records, and literary pieces of cultural value. The museum is dedicated to preserving local historical treasures to showcase the area's traditions and background.

Museum of South Texas History

The Museum of South Texas History, located just 12 minutes north of McAllen, is a great place to discover the rich history of the South Texas Region and our Mexican neighbors. The museum is open to the public and has a variety of exhibits, including the Rio Grande Legacy that explores the history of the Rio Grande River and the Old Jail that dates back to 1910.
